First 250 words

May 24, 1795 2:15 a.m.

Sarah awoke in the middle of the night, a sense of restlessness waking her from her slumber. She sat up in bed and looked around her small room. Most nights in their Ronan village were filled with peace and quiet. Only the tranquil sounds of crickets chirping, a gentle wind rustling through the trees, or the nearby river flowing could be heard.
This night, however, felt different. It was dark, but from what she could see, nothing seemed different. But something felt wrong.
Sarah climbed out of bed and tiptoed over to her slightly open door. She placed a piece of her long blonde hair behind her ear and poked her head out the door. From the flickering light of a candle, she saw her mother sitting down next to a sleeping woman, placing a cold rag on the woman’s head. The woman had been there for three days, yet Sarah had forgotten she was here.
She shook her head, feeling silly for being so absent-minded. How could she forget? Her mother was the village healer after all. Even though her Awakening allowed her to heal only physical injuries, not sickness, she knew everything there was to know about medicine and ways to deal with illness. Maybe the forgotten thought of having the ill woman in her home had woken her? She was about to walk back to her bed when she heard her mother’s voice.
“Sarah, what are you doing awake?”
Sarah winced.
